“We will have to renovate the organization of collection and recycling in France”,

said Mr. Jean-Marc Boursier, Deputy General Director at Suez, in charge of waste activity in Europe, and President of the European Federation of Waste Management and Environmental Services (FEAD), in an interview with French newspaper “Les Echos” published on November 22 2017. In this interview, Mr. Boursier indicates that France recycles around 45% of its waste, while the Northern European countries recycle around 50-55%, the UK around 40%, and the Southern European countries around 30-35%. Thus, France is performing well in recycling its waste compared to other European countries. However, in order to achieve the ambitious European objective of recycling 65% of waste by 2030, the French waste collection and recycling model has to be renovated and improved.

So we started thinking about the problem: it has happened to all of us to be standing in front of recycling bins without knowing to which of them we should throw the wrapping paper or packaging we are carrying. The Earth is being polluted and slowly destroyed, but even with good intentions, when we wish to do something good about this issue, we sometimes find ourselves stopped by small details and things we do not know about. We observed that even when we theoretically know that a bin is made for plastic, another for paper and another for glass, certain products aren’t so clear about how to recycle them, but as they are made by a particular company or from some kind of material, we are not sure if it is even recyclable, and there is often no information on the internet about what to do with this waste.

Hence, this problem some of us face on a daily basis is the starting point of our project : how to help people recycle the products they bought in the most direct and personalized way.
