Sustainable and affordable alternatives to buying new household items:
Sustainable: reach to environmentally conscious students
Affordable: keeps students from having to buy brand new household items that they will not use for the entirety of its useful life.
Primarily, students who are moving in/out of Paris for their study at SciencesPo (geographic/demographic), who are (aware of their) temporary status in Paris for study (behavioral/psychological) and do now want to spend too much/waste on housing goods/utensils for the basic need- budget and environmental conscious (behavioral/psychological)
Moving out students: Originally from outside Paris, but moving out due to (1) Full time job in another city (2) Internship in another city (3) Further study in another city (4) Relocation to another city for family/personal reasons With the timeline
Moving in students: From another city, moving into Paris for (1) Study-abroad (2) Full time at SciencesPo for 1 or 2 years With the duration of
We will try to reduce the costs of storing through a partnership with Sciences Po. However we will have some fixed overhead costs of administrative, marketing, and logistical nature. These costs will be accounted for with the small rental fee that we require.
We will use absorption costing in which all fixed overhead costs will be taken into account in the rental fee price so that we at the least breakeven. This means that rental costs will vary from year to year depending on the previous year’s FOH costs.
We will require a rental fee for the semester where students pay a small amount (which will vary with the type of item and the length of time; one semester, six months, one year…). Students will pay upfront and we will record other information in order to enforce a fee for late returns, deterioration or failure to return items.
Reducing the need to buy new items decreases consumption, and re-using items reduces waste and the environmental and social costs of overconsumption. We reduce waste by providing a second life for household items that have not fully depreciated, and encourage a new sustainable economic model for students.
